Exploiting COTS-Based RE Methods: An Experience Report
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper reports on an exploratory study of a key hypothesis of enterprise resource planning (ERP) requirements engineering (RE) adoption, namely that framing applications to the packaged RE model leads to integral practices and economic development. We analyzed two interrelated pilot projects developed for a business division of a large IT company, using Oracle’s commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) application implementation method (AIM). The study showed that AIM RE improved team collaboration and project management experience, but needed to make hidden assumptions explicit to support data visibility and integrity. Our study can help practitioners generate more effective and mature processes when exploiting COTS-based RE methods.

The Design of a Fault-Tolerant COTS-Based Bus Architecture for Space Applications*
The high-performance, scalability and miniaturization requirements together with the power, mass and cost constraints mandate the use of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) components and standards in the X2000 avionics system architecture for deep-space missions. In this paper, we report our experiences and findings on the design of an IEEE 1394 compliant fault-tolerant COTS-based bus architecture...
متن کاملAdapting COTS Products The Fine Line between Development and Maintenance
COTS products can play various architectural roles in software systems: as interfaces to problem-specific functionality, as components that provide such functionality itself, and as intermediary connectors and components in more complex systems. In doing so, COTS products impose their own, unique constraints on organization and functionality. Over the last ten years, we have gained considerable...
متن کاملDesigning and Building Software Federations
Commercial Off The Shelf tools (COTS) are now widely distributed, of good quality, relatively cheap and cover most of the application domains. It is thus a surprise to consider that it is uncommon to reuse COTS when building large applications. At least it is recognized that building a large application based on COTS is a tough issue. This paper seeks to show why COTS reuse is not a reality; we...
متن کاملSystematic Construction of Goal-Oriented COTS Taxonomies
The use of Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) components is becoming a strategic need because they offer the possibility to build systems at reduced costs and within shorter development time. Having efficient and reliable COTS components selection methods is a key issue not only for exploiting the potential benefits of this technology, but also for facing the problems and risks involved. Searching...
متن کاملAn architectural approach to building systems from COTS software components
As software systems become increasingly complex to build developers are turning more and more to integrating pre-built components from third party developers into their systems. This use of Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) software components in system construction presents new challenges to system architects and designers. This paper is an experience report that describes issues raised when int...
